I have painted, drawn, carved and composed with various mosaic materials specimens of flora and fauna.

In the history of art flowers have been represented in myriads of ways. Birds have been depicted; sometimes alive, mostly dead. These images can be seen as stills of passing life. Usually they represent mortality but they may also celebrate the richness of life or the forms of nature. With this exhibition I introduce my point of view on the subject.

I studied Roman-Byzantine mosaic technique in Ravenna. Later I created my own version of the traditional technique. Mosaic as an art form is ageless ‒ simultaneously ancient and always new. As such it is a bridge between the past and present. These images also carry traces of historical imagery. In the process of representation the mosaic has a double role: the mosaic’s matter represents its object, in this case birds or flowers, but at the same time it represents only itself. The final touch is the changing effects of light that determine in what form the mosaic appears.

In the paintings the materiality is more transparent, and the image ‒ that is, what is represented ‒ has the major role. The documentary painting style is a way to consider likeness and the modes of representation. Striving for likeness is an attempt to form the question What is this? or What does this mean? The resulting image is a statement: I saw this; for a moment I existed. By creating an image of the world I am trying to trace the contour of my existence in that world. Thus the exhibition is not only an exploration of species or the modes of representation, it is also an exploration of the self.
