Jenni Yppärilä: Mini kaufhaus (Berlin), 2018, three-dimensional painting, ca. 50 x 45 x 16 cm

I work in-between painting and sculpture. Since 2012 I have portrayed Finnish build environmet in a form of three-dimensional painting. The exhibition “Notes from outside” expands to portray buildings found in Vyborg, New York and Berlin. Materials to my work I have collected from cities mentioned during art residency periods in 2016 and 2017.

In my work, I document build environment and meaningful places for people. The starting point for my intrerest in buildings has always been primarily sosiological. Buildings reflect history and present, the values and changes of society, and the social environmet of the individual. For me the buildings are symbols of humanity in good and bad. When removed from their natural surroundings and distorted, the buildings get humane characters. They transform from pictures of places of passing by to a portraits of society and people living there.
